Longhouse Ruins II

15″ x 11″ Acrylic Layers on Paper
Mounted on 1.5″ Cradled Birch Panel

Piece from the Pathways & Precipices ~ An Artist’s Return to Awe and Wonder Series inspired by experiences and transformations from Bandelier National Monument Artist Residency for month of November 2022.

The ruins of the dwellings of Long House are captivating, sparking imagination of what the structures must have looked like. Time and erosion are slowly blurring the details of what remains. The sheer face of the canyon wall is dramatic and colorful. I chose this dramatic subject to demonstrate my Acrylic Layers Process with. This piece started out as a bright orange and red underpainting over which I built up progressive physically distanced layers while allowing the orange and red to sparkle through.
